Subscribe To Comments: Checked By Default Removed

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Lesson to be learned: When you are sitting on semi exclusive news, POST IT! I originally wrote this on 29th March, but ran out of time to post it because of our move from China. Since then, Mark Jaquith himself has written about this, and others such as the Weblog Tools Collection have picked the story up. I decided I’d go ahead and post this, because my point about it being removed without warning still stands.

NOT All My Loving - CommentLuv Deactivated

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

This post was supposed to be titled All My Loving and announce the adoption of the CommentLuv plugin. In combination with my very own KeywordLuv plugin, I would have indeed been giving you all my loving. Unfortunately, I had a problem with CommentLuv and have deactivated it. For now…

Where Have All The WordPress Plugin Lists Gone?

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

When I recently finished the LocalCurrency plugin, I tried adding it to the various WordPress plugin lists that exist and found that several are gone!

I’m not talking about individual lists on people’s blogs listing which WordPress plugins they use.  There are many of these! I’m talking about complete lists or repositories of all WordPress plugins in existence (or as close as possible).

In this post I look at a several WordPress plugin lists which have been removed, are down, or don’t seem to have any people running them. (more…)

Shylock Adsense Plugin - Hack To Avoid Smart Pricing

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

In my last post, I talked about Adsense Smart Pricing and how blogs can avoid it by only showing ads to search engine visitors.

One option for WordPress is the Who Sees Ads plugin, which has the ability to do this. I prefer the Shylock Adsense plugin for the reasons given in my last post: automatic placement of ads; no need to enter placeholder in each post; easy to move ads from, say, top right to top left, etc.

The problem with Shylock Adsense is that although it can show ads on old posts only (mostly search engine traffic), there is no option to show ads only to search engine traffic. I really wanted this functionality, so I added a few lines of code to the plugin to enable it. In this post I explain how to do it. (more…)

WordPress Plugin - Simple Spam Filter Hack Available

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Recently RT from Untwisted Vortex threw down a WordPress Plugin Rewrite Challenge, asking whether I’d rewrite the Simple Spam Filter plugin from Joe Tan. RT is a fan of Simple Spam Filter but felt that some additional checks would result in more spam being caught. (more…)

Is It Okay For Plugins To Promote Themselves?

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

The upcoming release of the DualFeeds plugin for WordPress includes an optional feature which promotes the plugin by displaying ‘Powered By DualFeeds’. I want to know what you think about this - is it okay for plugins to promote themselves? (more…)

Page Links Broken In My Most Viewed Section

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

In my last post, I covered how to set up a Most Viewed section in the Sidebar, using Lester Chan’s WP-PostViews plugin. Unfortunately, there was a bug in the version of WP-PostViews that I was using, which broke the link to my DualFeeds plugin page in the Most Viewed section. (more…)

WordPress - Most Viewed - Sidebar Widget

Monday, August 20th, 2007

I use Lester Chan’s WP-PostViews plugin to count how many views each post gets. I recently added a Most Viewed section to my Sidebar. The problem? I use WordPress Widgets and there is no widget for the plugin. (more…)

Getting BuyMeABeer To Show Only On Selected Posts

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

I have now adopted the Buy Me A Beer plugin, but there was one thing I didn’t like: it is not possible to make it appear on the sidebar for selected posts only. I wanted it on my plugin pages, but not my other posts (I don’t believe in donations for posts). Here I explain how to do this. (more…)

This is just a link to a project for my students. Please ignore.
