I’d like to announce the release of my second Greasemonkey script: Google Numbered Search Results; which numbers the SERP entries delivered by the Google search engine. (more…)

New Greasemonkey Script To Number Bing Search Results

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Earlier today, I released my first Greasemonkey script, Bing Numbered Search Results. As the name suggests, it numbers the SERP entries delivered by Microsoft’s new Bing search engine. (more…)

Google Adsense Serving Up Malware?

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Tonight I was browsing the Internet, when my virus software notified me of a potential threat from openstat.ws. None of the websites open in Firefox had a link to this site in the source. After some investigation, it appears that the potentially malicious site is called by Google Adsense.

SearchWiki Breaks Numbered Google Results – Easy Fix

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

On 20 November 2008, Google introduced SearchWiki, allowing users to customize their search results by re-ranking, deleting, adding and commenting on them. I’m not going to cover how SearchWiki works, nor am I going to examine whether the impact of SearchWiki is positive or negative.

I was going to moan about how SearchWiki broke the Numbered Google Results script for Greasemonkey. Instead, I just worked out how to fix it. Here’s a simple hack to the Numbered Google Results script which allows it to work with SearchWiki.

The Curse Of The Blogger

Friday, August 8th, 2008

I recently left a comment on the blog of my friend Terence Chang, that I feel is worthy of further exploration. It discusses a common phenomenon that seems to be a danger to many bloggers and which I’ve come to call the curse of the blogger.

No, it’s not the syndrome of bloggers running out of steam at the six month mark and giving up, just before their blog starts moving. In fact, it’s the opposite: bloggers diversifing and trying to do too much.

Embedded Search Box In Google Search Results

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

I recently read a post which picked up a humourous (but offensive) result returned by Google Search via the sitelinks feature.

I thought I’d check it out to see if it had been fixed, either by Urban Dictionary or by Google themselves. However, when I tried the search, I didn’t get any sitelinks at all. Instead, I saw something I’d never seen before: a search box, embedded in the search results! (more…)

Change To Google Search With Quotes

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Following my own advice in my last post, about not sitting on semi exclusive news, I thought I better get this post out quickly! I’m not sure if this has been reported elsewhere, or even how long the change has been in place, but it seems that Google have made a tweak to their Search facility.

It’s only a very minor change, but may be of interest to some… (more…)

Toolbar PageRank Update In Progress?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I’ve just noticed that both the Search Status extension for Firefox and the Google Toolbar for IE are reporting More Than Scratch The Surface as having a toolbar PageRank of 5. This is 1 higher than the PR4 the site had the last time I noticed (a couple of days ago). (more…)

Final Thoughts On The PageRank Debacle

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Many things have been said about the recent toolbar PageRank update. Most tend to agree that PageRank has lost relevance and that we shouldn’t place too much importance on it. Most of us feel it’s time to move on and stop talking about it. I’ll do that, but not until I’ve had a final say on the matter. (more…)

Google PageRank From PR0 To PR4? Maybe…

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

I’ve been an interested reader in the current PageRank blogstorm, but not an active participant. I haven’t been affected personally as this blog was created after the last toolbar update, so my PageRank has been 0.

After reading Andy Beard’s Real or Fake PageRank Update In Progress, I decided to see what the PageRank checkers were saying about my site. The answer: It seems I’ve jumped from PR0 to PR4! (more…)
