New WordPress Plugin - KeywordLuv

April 7th, 2008 by Stephen Cronin (746 views)

I’d like to announce the release of KeywordLuv, my new WordPress plugin, but RT from Untwisted Vortex beat me to it, announcing it several days ago. I need to be quicker with this sort of thing! I don’t mind, as KeywordLuv was partially inspired by RT’s post on building backlinks via DoFollow blogs.

KeywordLuv helps you reward your commentators by separating their name from their keywords in the link to their site. This gives them improved anchor text, which can help their site rank higher in the search engine results.

Example Of KeywordLuv

If a commentator enters: "Stephen@Custom WordPress Plugins" in the Name field, their comment will have:

Stephen from Custom WordPress Plugins Says:

If they don’t enter the @ symbol, the anchor text will simply display as normal. For a live example, see the first comment below. Feel free to leave a comment to try it out!

What Are The Benefits?

Most commentators enter their name in the Name field. This helps them rank well for searches on their name, but little else!

Some commentators enter their chosen keywords instead of their name. This helps them rank well for searches on their keywords, but many blog owners will mark them as spam! Even if you don’t mark them as spam, you probably get a little tired of talking to Miami Hotels!

KeywordLuv lets them enter their name, so you can feel as though you are talking with a real person, while at the same time helping their blog rank well for their chosen keywords. It’s the best of both worlds!

The Fine Print

There are a couple of things you need to be aware of:

  1. For your commentators to really benefit from this, you will need a separate Dofollow plugin, to remove the nofollow tag.
  2. KeywordLuv may not work with all themes. For more information and workarounds, see KeywordLuv - Theme Compatibility Issue.

Where Do I Get KeywordLuv?

The plugin is available for download via the KeywordLuv plugin home page. More information about how KeywordLuv works and how to use it is also available on the plugin home page.

    WOWWWW!! It worksss!!

    1. Louis,

Damn right, but I was supposed to be first! RT beats me to the announcement, now you beat me to the comment… :)

  3. :-D Hahaha… I didn’t mean to beat you to it. You seem to be preoccupied these days.

    1. Hi RT,

I’m averaging 1 or 2 posts a month at the moment, you do 4 or 5 a day - its no wonder you beat me! As you know, I’m pretty busy in the offline world at the moment… I’ll try to ramp it up again in a few weeks…

    1. Hi Tim,

Your welcome. I’ll have to check them out! I’ve only been to one of your blogs…

  5. Great plugin ;-) Thanks for the effort.. Hope it works with 2.5…

    1. I’m using 2.5 and it works.

    2. Marc,

I’m sorry, but I’ve removed the link to your site. I don’t mind that you linked to a commercial site, but the comment itself is a typical spam comment (does it work with version x.x).

Sorry if spamming was not your intention, but I often see this type of comment on my plugin pages and I always remove the link. Feel free to try again in furture.

By the way, if you really want to know if a plugin works with 2.5, you can always check the WordPress Codex Compatibility List.

  7. Stephen,

Another brilliant plugin! I have just installed it because it solved 2 huge issues on my blog and I’m sure my readers will enjoy it too.

BTW, I posted about it as well, hope you don’t mind!

    Alex’s last blog post..What Did I Miss?

    1. Hi Alex,

Thanks again for writing up the plugin. Of course I don’t mind! :)

I’ll be one of the people using it on your blog from time to time. :)

  8. That is really neat, makes comments make so much more sense. How can you hold a proper conversation with ‘cheap car insurance’.

    1. Hi Ed,

Exactly! I don’t mind people benefitting from the keywords, but saying Hi Cheap Car Insurance gets you down after a while. I found myself wanting to take the mickey a little bit and say things like Hi Cheapo…

  9. Hey Stephen - neat plugin. (Your post title from the comment you left on WebDiggin pulled us in to find out more. )

What about situations where you only want to target part of a keyword phrase. For example, we’re targeting the bluehost of bluehost reviews.

We signed that we were from bluehost… but we’re not. We’re just targeting that one keyword.

    Is that a common scenario?

Anyway to tweak your preview plugin below to reflect what will really show up? (BTW, which plugin are you using for that?)

    1. Hi Mark,

Interesting point, but I see what you mean. At the moment there’s no way to do it. That might be something I can look at some point in the future. I’m a little busy right now as I said on the other post.

As for the preview plugin, tweaked! ;-)

I use the Live Comment Preview plugin and I hacked it to show link as it will appear. If other people want this I may be able to do a post on how to hack it…

  11. looks like a neat plugin, would be interesting to see if most people who sign with their keyword will indeed sign with their name now aswell…

    Mirjam’s last blog post..I´m on a Break!

    1. Hi Mirjam,

Yes, it will be interesting to see. I’m generally easy on borderline cases, but I plan to get stricter. I’ve now added a rules paragraph to the Comments section. I had two comments on this very post, saying great plugin, but not actually using it!

Their comments were short and didn’t add anything to the discussion and it seems they didn’t even read the post, so they’re gone. A bit harsh maybe. I didn’t mark them as spam, as I’m not 100% sure they were, but I deleted them.

Anyway, we’ll see how it goes.

Nice seeing you back here, thanks for stopping by!

  12. Stephen, can this plugin be used on wordpress hosted plugins or is this strictly for blogs that are not hosted as part of the WP dot com domain? This is an absolutely wonderful idea as it basically provides a meaningful signature line right in the header versus what ended up being a mess of keywords for names.

Heather’s last blog post..Almost Time For Picnics And Fun

    1. Hi Heather,

Unfortunately, I think it will only work with self-hosted WordPress installations. I think WordPress.com only allows a few plugins, but I haven’t used it myself.

  13. What a great idea! I just have to give this a try to see it in action… thanks so much!

Tee’s last blog post..Plain Talk About Poop

    1. Thanks Tee. Hope you like it..

  14. Hey Stephen, it is a neat plugin, but we’re still on the fence about installing it. (I know you’re busy - we just thought we’d share some feedback as food for thought)

What I’m worried about is what happens in the future when we deactivate the plugins. (For whatever reason. Maybe you get too caught up in your other projects and can’t upgrade the plugin to make it compatible with future WP versions)

Won’t I be left with a series of names that look like Mark @ WebDiggin. I guess that’s not too bad. I was thinking you could have an uninstall option that cleans up the comment author field… nevermind. You couldn’t know if the commenter wanted their name stripped off or the keywords. I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Personally, we’ll probably still leave WebDiggin as our name because that’s the brand we’re trying to create, instead of our personal name. But that’s just us.

    Cheers, Mark

(nice hack to the preview plugin btw)

    1. Hi WebDiggin,

No worries. Remember I’m a WordPress user too, so I can understand deciding not to use a plugin, being concerned about what happens if you decide to deactivate it, etc. :)

As it stands, you would be left with a series of names that look like Mark @ WebDiggin. Personally I don’t see that as too bad, but I can understand that to some people that wouldn’t be great.

It should be possible to write a utility which removes the @ and the keywords, although I may not have time for a couple of weeks. I’ll look into it when I get over my current project…

ha, that’s a great idea! nice compliment to commentluv too!

    1. Hi Andy,

      Thanks for stopping by.

It’s been niggling at the back of my mind for a while now. I have to admit that CommentLuv helped push it along because CommentLuv provides such a great link. I thought, why can’t we have a better link for our names as well?

I think it should work really well with CommentLuv: A deep link with keywords courtesy of CommentLuv and another link with keywords courtesy of KeywordLuv. Two bites of the cherry!

  18. I don’t like the spammy nature of using keywords instead of a name, but I want to allow my readers to get some benefit from commenting.

This is a great plugin. I’ll have to install it and announce it to my readers!

    1. Steven,

Thanks. I saw that you’re using the plugin on your site. I hope it works well for you!

  19. Wow, incredible. I think I will also implement it on my blog. I just Stumbled you. Hope you get some traffic from them.

    Olivier.

    1. Hi Olivier,

I see you’ve also started using the plugin on your site. Thanks - and thanks for the stumble!

      1. You’re welcome.
I have been using my keywords on other blogs, and now people can use my blog to get some targeted link backs. So feel free to come back and leave some comments.

        Olivier.

  20. Interesting idea. I don’t mind letting people leave kws for a name, but this certainly makes it look better.

The preview thing below is cool too.

    1. Bob,

Yes, I was letting people leave keywords, but I just thought it would be better if WordPress let people leave both a name and some anchor text. Of course is can’t, but this plugin solves the problem.

  21. Interesting new feature, I think this is the first site that I have personal been on to see this new keyword luv feature. I really like this plug-in for comments and plan in using something similar on my blog. I hate the standard word press blog tool which is so boring and doesn’t provide the viewer much to look at and also doesn’t seem to make the reader want to make a comment on the post.

    1. Hi Alex,

Thanks. I hope this plugin ends up on a lot of blogs. We’ll have to wait and see…

  22. What an excellent idea, Stephen. As well as a way of promoting our blog for search engine reasons this provides an extra level of personalization - it is a friendly plugin.
In my case as my user name is in my blog title I can include my real first name. I am so used to seeing my nickname that sooner or later I am sure I am going to introduce myself as that in real life :-)

  23. […] More information from Stephen […]

  24. I added the KeywordLuv plug-in to our our blog and think it is great, thanks for the info! It really makes comments much more friendly and seem to help people get more involved in giving feedback on our blog. Thanks for the info!
