New WordPress Plugin – KeywordLuv

WordPress Plugin News 79 Comments

I’d like to announce the release of KeywordLuv, my new WordPress plugin, but RT from Untwisted Vortex beat me to it, announcing it several days ago. I need to be quicker with this sort of thing! I don’t mind, as KeywordLuv was partially inspired by RT’s post on building backlinks via DoFollow blogs.

KeywordLuv helps you reward your commentators by separating their name from their keywords in the link to their site. This gives them improved anchor text, which can help their site rank higher in the search engine results.

Example Of KeywordLuv

If a commentator enters: "Stephen@Custom WordPress Plugins" in the Name field, their comment will have:

Stephen from Custom WordPress Plugins Says:

If they don’t enter the @ symbol, the anchor text will simply display as normal. For a live example, see the first comment below. Feel free to leave a comment to try it out!

What Are The Benefits?

Most commentators enter their name in the Name field. This helps them rank well for searches on their name, but little else!

Some commentators enter their chosen keywords instead of their name. This helps them rank well for searches on their keywords, but many blog owners will mark them as spam! Even if you don’t mark them as spam, you probably get a little tired of talking to Miami Hotels!

KeywordLuv lets them enter their name, so you can feel as though you are talking with a real person, while at the same time helping their blog rank well for their chosen keywords. It’s the best of both worlds!

The Fine Print

There are a couple of things you need to be aware of:

  1. For your commentators to really benefit from this, you will need a separate Dofollow plugin, to remove the nofollow tag.
  2. KeywordLuv may not work with all themes. For more information and workarounds, see KeywordLuv – Theme Compatibility Issue.

Where Do I Get KeywordLuv?

The plugin is available for download via the KeywordLuv plugin home page. More information about how KeywordLuv works and how to use it is also available on the plugin home page.

      Louis,

Damn right, but I was supposed to be first! RT beats me to the announcement, now you beat me to the comment… 🙂

  1. RT Cunningham

😀 Hahaha… I didn’t mean to beat you to it. You seem to be preoccupied these days.

      Hi RT,

I’m averaging 1 or 2 posts a month at the moment, you do 4 or 5 a day – its no wonder you beat me! As you know, I’m pretty busy in the offline world at the moment… I’ll try to ramp it up again in a few weeks…

Thanks for making this available to us. I will use it on at least one of my sites for sure.

      Hi Tim,

Your welcome. I’ll have to check them out! I’ve only been to one of your blogs…

    1. RT Cunningham@illegal downoading

I’m using 2.5 and it works.

      Marc,

I’m sorry, but I’ve removed the link to your site. I don’t mind that you linked to a commercial site, but the comment itself is a typical spam comment (does it work with version x.x).

Sorry if spamming was not your intention, but I often see this type of comment on my plugin pages and I always remove the link. Feel free to try again in furture.

By the way, if you really want to know if a plugin works with 2.5, you can always check the WordPress Codex Compatibility List.

  3. Alex@WordPress Web 2.0 Guide

    Stephen,

Another brilliant plugin! I have just installed it because it solved 2 huge issues on my blog and I’m sure my readers will enjoy it too.

BTW, I posted about it as well, hope you don’t mind!

      Hi Alex,

Thanks again for writing up the plugin. Of course I don’t mind! 🙂

I’ll be one of the people using it on your blog from time to time. 🙂

  4. Ed@email marketing

That is really neat, makes comments make so much more sense. How can you hold a proper conversation with ‘cheap car insurance’.

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi Ed,

Exactly! I don’t mind people benefitting from the keywords, but saying Hi Cheap Car Insurance gets you down after a while. I found myself wanting to take the mickey a little bit and say things like Hi Cheapo…

  5. Mark@bluehost

Hey Stephen – neat plugin. (Your post title from the comment you left on WebDiggin pulled us in to find out more. )

What about situations where you only want to target part of a keyword phrase. For example, we’re targeting the bluehost of bluehost reviews.

We signed that we were from bluehost… but we’re not. We’re just targeting that one keyword.

    Is that a common scenario?

Anyway to tweak your preview plugin below to reflect what will really show up? (BTW, which plugin are you using for that?)

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi Mark,

Interesting point, but I see what you mean. At the moment there’s no way to do it. That might be something I can look at some point in the future. I’m a little busy right now as I said on the other post.

As for the preview plugin, tweaked! 😉

I use the Live Comment Preview plugin and I hacked it to show link as it will appear. If other people want this I may be able to do a post on how to hack it…

  6. Mirjam@Me Myself and I

looks like a neat plugin, would be interesting to see if most people who sign with their keyword will indeed sign with their name now aswell…

    Mirjam’s last blog post..I´m on a Break!

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi Mirjam,

Yes, it will be interesting to see. I’m generally easy on borderline cases, but I plan to get stricter. I’ve now added a rules paragraph to the Comments section. I had two comments on this very post, saying great plugin, but not actually using it!

Their comments were short and didn’t add anything to the discussion and it seems they didn’t even read the post, so they’re gone. A bit harsh maybe. I didn’t mark them as spam, as I’m not 100% sure they were, but I deleted them.

Anyway, we’ll see how it goes.

Nice seeing you back here, thanks for stopping by!

  7. Heather@Beach Promos

Stephen, can this plugin be used on wordpress hosted plugins or is this strictly for blogs that are not hosted as part of the WP dot com domain? This is an absolutely wonderful idea as it basically provides a meaningful signature line right in the header versus what ended up being a mess of keywords for names.

Heather’s last blog post..Almost Time For Picnics And Fun

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi Heather,

Unfortunately, I think it will only work with self-hosted WordPress installations. I think WordPress.com only allows a few plugins, but I haven’t used it myself.

  8. Tee@Joyful Digesting

What a great idea! I just have to give this a try to see it in action… thanks so much!

  9. WebDiggin@MakeMoneyOnline

Hey Stephen, it is a neat plugin, but we’re still on the fence about installing it. (I know you’re busy – we just thought we’d share some feedback as food for thought)

What I’m worried about is what happens in the future when we deactivate the plugins. (For whatever reason. Maybe you get too caught up in your other projects and can’t upgrade the plugin to make it compatible with future WP versions)

Won’t I be left with a series of names that look like Mark @ WebDiggin. I guess that’s not too bad. I was thinking you could have an uninstall option that cleans up the comment author field… nevermind. You couldn’t know if the commenter wanted their name stripped off or the keywords. I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Personally, we’ll probably still leave WebDiggin as our name because that’s the brand we’re trying to create, instead of our personal name. But that’s just us.

    Cheers, Mark

(nice hack to the preview plugin btw)

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi WebDiggin,

No worries. Remember I’m a WordPress user too, so I can understand deciding not to use a plugin, being concerned about what happens if you decide to deactivate it, etc. 🙂

As it stands, you would be left with a series of names that look like Mark @ WebDiggin. Personally I don’t see that as too bad, but I can understand that to some people that wouldn’t be great.

It should be possible to write a utility which removes the @ and the keywords, although I may not have time for a couple of weeks. I’ll look into it when I get over my current project…

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi Andy,

      Thanks for stopping by.

It’s been niggling at the back of my mind for a while now. I have to admit that CommentLuv helped push it along because CommentLuv provides such a great link. I thought, why can’t we have a better link for our names as well?

I think it should work really well with CommentLuv: A deep link with keywords courtesy of CommentLuv and another link with keywords courtesy of KeywordLuv. Two bites of the cherry!

  10. Alex Dombroff@Fresno Jobs

Saw this on another site and absolutely loved it. Give some “luv” and get some “luv” with more comments.

  11. Johan Karlsson@cheap sat nav

Really good plugin. I have been thinking of something like this and suddenly i find that it already excist.

    BR,
    Johan

  12. Steven Lohrenz@Online Business Automation

I don’t like the spammy nature of using keywords instead of a name, but I want to allow my readers to get some benefit from commenting.

This is a great plugin. I’ll have to install it and announce it to my readers!

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Steven,

Thanks. I saw that you’re using the plugin on your site. I hope it works well for you!

  13. Olivier@ 7 laws of attraction

Wow, incredible. I think I will also implement it on my blog. I just Stumbled you. Hope you get some traffic from them.

    Olivier.

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi Olivier,

I see you’ve also started using the plugin on your site. Thanks – and thanks for the stumble!

      1. olivier @ 7 laws of attraction

        You’re welcome.
I have been using my keywords on other blogs, and now people can use my blog to get some targeted link backs. So feel free to come back and leave some comments.

        Olivier.

  14. Bob@ San Diego MLS

Interesting idea. I don’t mind letting people leave kws for a name, but this certainly makes it look better.

The preview thing below is cool too.

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Bob,

Yes, I was letting people leave keywords, but I just thought it would be better if WordPress let people leave both a name and some anchor text. Of course is can’t, but this plugin solves the problem.

  15. Alex @ San Diego Real Estate

Interesting new feature, I think this is the first site that I have personal been on to see this new keyword luv feature. I really like this plug-in for comments and plan in using something similar on my blog. I hate the standard word press blog tool which is so boring and doesn’t provide the viewer much to look at and also doesn’t seem to make the reader want to make a comment on the post.

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi Alex,

Thanks. I hope this plugin ends up on a lot of blogs. We’ll have to wait and see…

  16. Sue@Blogging Sueblimely

What an excellent idea, Stephen. As well as a way of promoting our blog for search engine reasons this provides an extra level of personalization – it is a friendly plugin.
In my case as my user name is in my blog title I can include my real first name. I am so used to seeing my nickname that sooner or later I am sure I am going to introduce myself as that in real life 🙂

  17. Alex @ San Diego Real Estate

I added the KeywordLuv plug-in to our our blog and think it is great, thanks for the info! It really makes comments much more friendly and seem to help people get more involved in giving feedback on our blog. Thanks for the info!

  18. Annie@Gatlinburg Real Estate

I know that I am a little late to the party, but, this plugin is AWESOME! I love your luv. We are currently setting up our blog and plan on using this. Thanks!

  19. MackGoodman@Roth IRA Facts

I just found your site from courtneytuttle.com. I like this plug-in. I don’t get many comments but would like to reward the ones who do. This looks a great way to give quality backlinks. Thanks

  20. Mariah@Utah Wedding Catering

yea its about time such a thing came into existence. now people can get useful links to help them improve their searches for google.

  21. RT@fart jokes

I’ve been trying to make time to visit sites that use this plugin, but I’m not finding enough time to visit sites period. It sucks when I’m too busy, like I’ve been the past few days.

  22. Peter@Get Rich Stress Free

Same with me RT! It’s really hard to visit sites when you are busy. It seems like you can do nothing about it even if you like.

  23. Louise@French Desserts

I have been following this for a while and have been commenting on other people’s blogs that have KeywordLuv. I finally took the plunge and installed CommentLuv and KeywordLuv on my New Orleans food blog- bon appetit!

  24. Keith@Web Affiliate Program

So, you are the man behind KeywordLuv! Great plugin…I’ve had zero issues implementing it on any of my blogs. I’ve only just started using it to my benefit as a commentator though.

I’ll have to check out your DualFeeds plugin.

  25. spike@myrtle beach real estate

What I don’t get is, with CommentLuv, does it parse any post that has been done by me, even on other blogs?

    And if so….how?

  26. Monika@Freelance Writing

This CommentLuv plugin is really neat. I had to switch my link love off because of all the spam I received but I can see how this works with the addition of CommentLuv. People are definitely more behaved, don’t you think?

  27. Jerry@Hostmonster Hosting Review

Gosh, this is a coooooool plugin. I’m downloading this and sharing some link love at my personal blog right next! Thanks.

  28. Daren@Lunarpages Review

Awesome plug in! This is something I never thought about before. In fact I laugh out loud when the part you said people getting tired to speak to Miami Hotel! that’s good one. Thanks for the sharing!

  29. spike@myrtle beach website design

You know, if enough of us WP-hosted blogs were to demand that KeywordLuv, CommentLuv and DoFollow were added to their approved list, we might get somewhere.

Or not. But I’m finding that I’m getting a better ranking from the blog while it’s hosted on WP than when I installed it on my host, so I’m staying put.

  30. seobag@seo wordpress blog

if i type non latin keywords I see errors.
But in preview all looks greate.
How you think, is it bug ore not?

  31. Corey@Belleville Monster Invasion

I’m still on the fence about this one. I completely appreciate the idea of sharing the love. Aren’t you afraid of spam though? I think I’ll install it though and see how it goes! Thanks for the tip!

  32. Zaldy@Australia Web Hosting

Oh, you’re the guy who created the keyword plugin! I really like it, keywordluv brought more activity to my blogs thru discussions in commnets. You’re the man \
    m/

  33. Daren@hostgator web hosting review

I wonder how long you take to create this plugin. And what knowledge you need to create any plugin. I am getting interested in designing my plug in:)

  34. Cris @ pret hypothécaire

This plug-in works great. I noticed there was an increase of readers on my blog.. well, I really don’t know if they’re actually reading them.. but I’m just happy that most of the comments are filled with sense.

  35. tony@Web site hosting cheap

I think keyword luv was a great idea. Most people like leaving comments but if name is used for keyword that does not help link. If site already allows do follow links and want to help others atleast keyword luv lets them choose what link will say.

Nice post describes advantage of using keyword luv so people really understand what it is good for.

  36. dan@north florida home builders

Using keyword luv is a great idea by far. Having the ability to leave you name but also a keyword does help. I actually wasn’t to familiar with what this was until I read you posted and check out some. Thanks!

  37. Bill@Professional Singles

Stephen, what an awesome idea. Do you think Google will continue to reward these links for long? Regardless, I love it.

  38. Liam @ hypothèques

This plug-in is awesome. Thank you for writing an article about this even if untwisted vortex beat you with the announcement… 😉

  39. Major@Plumber

Thanks for creating such a plugin. It really increased my traffic as well as having them comeback from time to time…

  40. Daren@Web Hosting Deals

This is indeed a great plugin. Thanks very much. I’m thinking whether are you working together with other theme designers to naturally build into their designed themes to gain higher using rate.

  41. jeff@High yield certificate of deposit

You know you did something right when other people want to write about your plugin even before you do. One of the better wordpress plugins thanks.

  42. Salihu@link building resources

About Google and these plugins – I actually started researching whether Google actually takes these comments/links into consideration for backlinks and my research was showing me Google doesn’t, but after the latest update , I saw proof that it does, on one of my sites.
So guys enjoy the ride while it last. You can also see a giant dofollow list at my site.

  43. Jason@ENT Doctor

Congratulations on finding the holy grail. KeywordLuv helped me grew my site’s traffic tremendously.

  44. Kevin@Remote Controlled Toys

this is quite a nifty plugin. im surprised no one thought of this idea before. great job.

  45. sandeep

    another great work….

this plugin is really excellent.thanks for creating it mate…

  46. Hanna @ Delta Squadron Review

I would never refer to a WordPerss plug-in as a Holy Grail but I will certainly agree that KeywordLuv is great for increasing traffic.

  47. Derek Kimball Graphic Design

This may not be totally relevant, but I think it’s on topic…is anyone else noticing the switch back to using “nofollow” in their comments? I have been reading some older blog posts regarding the subject, and all the big time bloggers were all in favor of removing the nofollow from their comment section and some of their hyperlinks.

It’s funny, because now a lot of those who were so in favor of removing it, are now not showing the link love. This whole KeywordLuv plugin plays off of not using nofollow, so I thought this post would be a good place to ask the question. I would love to know why these big time bloggers are now going back to using the nofollow. If anyone knows, please share. I’m guessing it’s either because of spam problems, or they just aren’t worried about attracting more comments.

My blog is new, so I’m not using the nofollow. I’m wondering if this is a bad decision or not. I am just wanting to get comments, so I think leaving the nofollow off may help. this KeywordLuv plugin seems to be treating you well in getting a bunch of nice comments. Anyway..nice site you got here..i’ve been reading a few of your articles.

    1. Stephen Cronin Post author

      Hi Derek,

For the moment, Pages on this site (such as this one) are nofollow, but Posts are dofollow. Having said, the volume of spam I’m getting is causing me to reconsider – so I may follow those big time bloggers. I guess they’re doing it for the same reason as me.

Spending 30 minutes a day just moderating comments starts to get real old pretty quickly. As a result, I very rarely have time to actually respond to comments. Something wrong with that!

  48. Rohitk

This type of plugins are there to increase traffic and not getting spam comments..bcz people says out of all comments 91% are spammy ones…so Keywordluv, commentluv plugins are helping users a lot…..

  49. Donni@The Clickbank Code Bonus

It one of the best plugin are ever made. got this to installed on my blog.

    nice share

    thx

  50. pawan@Management Institute In India

Thanks for sharing You can watch all the videos online at.and this very useful for the information.

  51. Hanna @ CB Quantum Control

Actually, these type of plug-ins are there to increase traffic. Whether such traffic turns out to be legitimate of spammish is just a matter of luck!

  52. batanespaolo@Joomla Components

I guess its a blessing for SEOs!

Thanks for making this kind of plugin 🙂
    really helps.

  53. Roger@forbrukslån

Keywordluv is great! Have had an incredible increase in both traffic and comments after I installed it, and it`s not just spam like someone told me it would be. It`s so cool!

I had no idea installing these plugins would do so much with my traffic and income. Kinda incredible.

  54. Jamie Peterson

I think I’d better see for myself all the benefits of these wordpress plugins…day by day as I research more…I noticed that there are a lot of things you can do with it…Thanks for another interesting tutorial!

  55. utah insurance

Well , spammers are always attacked by the popular as well as nonpopular blogs, there are several ways to stop spammers but the disadvantage is that, you may never get a singal comment on your post.

  56. John James

Seems your plugin is no longer available. The link you provided above to download the plugin is broke, it goes nowhere.

The plugin is available for download via the KeywordLuv plugin home page.
